Suppose you have variables Weight (kg) and Height (m) in a spreadsheet, and you want to have the Body Mass Index in a new column.

You data are as follows:

Click the Format spreadsheet button and in the dialog box click the Column tab.

You enter the formula for the Body Mass Index, Weight/Height², written as Weight/Height^2, in the Default value input field:

The values for the Body Mass Index appear in the spreadsheet. When you enter Weight and Height for a new case, the column for Body Mass Index will automatically be completed.
